The most notable innovation of the 1780 edition is the inclusion of a large folding map charting Don Quixote’s journeys across Spain. The map was compiled by Tomás López, royal geographer, drawing on geographical observations supplied by Captain Joseph de Hermosilla of the Royal Corps of Engineers, also a member of the Academy.

The map plots the routes of Don Quixote’s three expeditions, identifying thirty-five numbered locations keyed to episodes in the novel, including the lagoons of Ruidera and the cave of Montesinos (no. 22), and the beach at Barcelona (no. 33). By situating Cervantes’s fictional narrative within a rigorously delineated geographical framework, the Academy imposed cartographic order upon literary invention. The result exemplifies a distinctly Enlightenment gesture: the reconciliation of imaginative narrative with empirical mapping, and the transformation of romance into a subject for scientific and national classification.

, first published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, recounts the adventures of Alonso Quijano, a provincial gentleman who, having immersed himself in romances of chivalry, assumes the name Don Quixote and sets out with his squire Sancho Panza in pursuit of knight-errantry. At once parody and homage to chivalric romance, the novel has long been regarded as foundational to the development of the European prose tradition, not only for its narrative complexity but for its sustained interrogation of illusion, authorship, and reality.

Cervantes’s own life – variously as soldier, captive in Algiers, tax-collector, and professional writer – has frequently been read in relation to the novel’s themes of endurance and disillusion.

 was widely translated and imitated; its influence can be traced across European fiction, from eighteenth-century satire to the nineteenth-century realist novel. The 1780 Academy edition marks the first concerted institutional effort to present the work within a scholarly and national framework, aligning philological precision with exemplary printing.

 has been unusually expansive, extending across literature, music, theatre, and visual media. In the nineteenth century the novel inspired operatic and symphonic treatments. In the twentieth century it was repeatedly adapted for stage and screen, from ballet and opera to the Broadway musical 

 (1965). Filmmakers have returned to the text both directly and obliquely: Orson Welles laboured intermittently on an unfinished film adaptation, while Terry Gilliam’s long-gestating 

 (2018) testifies to the novel’s continued imaginative pull.

, published in 1780 under the auspices of the Royal Spanish Academy and printed by Joaquín Ibarra, represents a major eighteenth-century attempt to stabilise and codify the text of Miguel de Cervantes’s masterpiece. The text was newly prepared by the academician Vicente de los Ríos, whose editorial apparatus included a ‘Critical judgment or analysis of 

,’ a ‘Life of Cervantes,’ and a ‘Chronological plan of 

.’ The edition reflects Enlightenment principles of scholarship, combining textual criticism, historical framing, and typographic refinement in the service of a national literary monument.
