Although not imaginary in themselves – they were an attempt to accurately record Bligh’s adventures – the maps nevertheless contributed to the mythic geography of the Pacific in European culture. The region was to acquire a powerful literary afterlife, through both the maritime adventure fiction of Frederick Marryat and Stevenson and the more fantastical conceits of Jules Verne. Many of the seminal tropes of Treasure Island – the centrality of the map, mutiny at sea, the lure of an exotic island, and the ordeal of survival – were already present in the Bounty story as refracted through Bligh’s Narrative. While Bligh’s record was an unarguably meant to inform rather than entertain, his rigorous and detailed testimony has fired the imagination ever since.

When Captain William Bligh (1754–1817) published his 

 of the infamous Bounty mutiny, he included maps charting both the ship’s Pacific course and his extraordinary 3,600-mile open-boat voyage after being cast adrift. These charts were empirical documents, intended as proof of Bligh’s seamanship and to defend his reputation against charges of incompetence or cruelty.

Yet for his readers they had an imaginative charge far beyond navigational record. The dotted lines across uncharted oceans amid the scatter of exotic island names gripped his readers’ imaginations and transformed Bligh’s ordeal into a modern odyssey. This was an age of both extraordinary discovery and the ascendancy of British naval dominance, an era that continues to fascinate, whether through the Hornblower novels, the various film versions of the Mutiny story (including the 1984 version starring Mel Gibson, with Anthony Hopkins as Bligh), or the ongoing popularity of the Aubrey/Maturin novels of Patrick O’Brian (1914–2000). The specific case itself continues to inform science fiction iterations of naval history, for example episodes of 

 in which the captain comes into destabilising conflict with the crew.
