Though not a conventional map, Abbott illustrated Flatland himself, creating diagrams and figures that serve as charts of the two-dimensional world. These outline the social districts, domestic interiors, and geometric interactions of its inhabitants. The images blend satirical caricature with scientific diagram, making the ‘geography’ of Flatland visible to the reader. In doing so, Abbott gave a cartographic aspect to his allegory, presenting a schematic plan of a world at once alien and recognisable.

Abbott’s Flatland uses geometric diagrams as maps of its two‑dimensional world, where social order and perception are defined by strict spatial limitation. The illustrations chart a society confined to a plane and unable to conceive of higher dimensions, provoking questions about the limits of our own perception.

This is a scarce first edition of Abbott’s cult classic of mathematical fantasy, published under the pseudonym ‘A Square.’ Flatland is at once a satire on Victorian society, a parable of perception, and an imaginative exploration of higher dimensions. It was ‘an immediate success, its first edition selling out within the month.’ (Blacklock)

Edwin Abbott (1838–1926), a school teacher and Anglican priest, imagines a world existing only in two dimensions, inhabited by geometric figures whose social rank is determined by shape. The narrator, a respectable square, is confronted with the existence of a third dimension when visited by a sphere, forcing him to question the limits of his own world. The novella thus combines parody of Victorian class and gender hierarchies with an introduction to non-Euclidean geometry, anticipating later developments in mathematics and physics. Though little noticed on first appearance, the work acquired renewed resonance in the twentieth century after Einstein’s theory of relativity and its suggestion of a fourth dimension. It has since become a classic of early science fiction and popular philosophy.

Abbott dedicated the book ‘To The Inhabitants of Space in General,’ urging his readers, like himself, to aspire beyond two dimensions ‘to the Secrets of four five or even six.’ The work has inspired sequels, adaptations, and reinterpretations, from Dionys Burger’s
