For subsequent volumes, and in later editions, Ransome himself supplied the illustrations.

 opens with a hand-drawn chart of Lake District waterways and islands, presented as the work of the child protagonists. The map situates make-believe adventure within recognisable topography: a landscape of play and exploration.

Arthur Ransome (1884–1967) was a journalist, foreign correspondent, critic, and amateur sailor whose prolific literary career is now largely defined by 

 (1930). As a young writer in London, he lived a precarious, bohemian existence, moving in artistic and literary circles. Whenever he could afford it, he would escape London for ‘the enchanted North’ and the Lake District, where he had spent many blissful family holidays as a child.

It was the memory of one of these holidays, on Coniston Water, that the story of 

 emerged. Despite Ransome’s own claim to dislike children and his dismissive description of the novel as a ‘brat book’, it inaugurated one of the most beloved sequences in British children’s literature.

Though initially slow in sales, Ransome persisted with the series, writing sequels. It was the success of the third such sequel, 

 (1932), that led to his books achieving best-seller status, going on to reshape the imaginative geography of the Lake District, inspire countless childhood holidays, and establish Ransome as a modern classic. By 1948, over a million copies of the twelve Swallows and Amazons novels had been sold worldwide.
