The Sunderland Collection

This atlas contains forty-three charts, including a chart of the Straits of Dover (Number Twelve). The chart of New York and New Jersey is considerably larger than the other charts in the atlases as it was probably published separately and included as a supplement upon request. The finely engraved chart details the east coast of America from New Amsterdam (New York) to the Delaware River.

Pieter Goos was one of the best-known maritime booksellers of Amsterdam. His elegant sea atlas is based largely on Hendrick Doncker’s cartographical work of 1659. Goos was an engraver rather than a chartmaker, however, he declares on the titlepage of the atlas that it will be as beneficial to 'Heerenen Kooplieden' (Gentlemen and Merchants) as to 'Schippers en Stuurllieden' (Pilots and Seamen).

The title page bears the date 1675 and the imprint of Goos’s widow, Margareta van den Keere, who would run the business following her husband’s death. This particular copy has wonderfully fine hand-colour, heightened in gold. The binding is original and bears the embossed coat-of-arms of the Dutch Admiralty.

Goos was an engraver, bookseller, and publisher who produced a number of highly influential maritime atlases. Goos first published his most famous work, the ‘Zee-Atlas’ (‘Sea Atlas’), in 1666.
