Compass Rose

Or "wind rose". A central feature of nearly all early navigational charts, designed to indicate direction. A compass rose can be simple, with only a single pointer indicating north. Or it can be complex, including North, South, East and Eest, and all the directions between. Compass roses are often highly decorated. Some map-makers had signature designs unique to themselves. They derive from the invention of the magnetic compass.
