State

The specific form of the wood block or copper plate that was used to make a map or other printed illustration. Each state of a map contains different characteristics. A 'first state' is the inital block or plate; a 'second' state and each later state contains changes as the map or illustration evolved. Not to be confused with an EDITION [link to glossary term].
