A personification of a wind, usually appearing outside a map and blowing inwards. Derived from the classical wind roses designed by Aristotle, which preceded the COMPASS ROSE [link to glossary entry]. The wind roses had 12 directions: Boreas (N), Meses (NNE), Caecias (NE), Apeliotes (E), Eurus (SE), Orthonotus (SSE), Notus (S), Leuconotus (SSW), Lips (SW), Zephyrus (W), Iapyx (NW) and Thracias (NNW).
