Francesco Berlinghieri
Back to people overviewA Florentine humanist and contemporary of Lorenzo de' Medici. Berlinghieri is best known for his vernacular version of Ptolemy's ‘Geographia’, the first edition to contain a translation into a modern language. His 'Geographia’ also included mythological, geographical and cartographical elements from various ancient and contemporary sources. Four so-called "modern maps" based on 15th Century manuscripts were added to the 27 originals, all likely engraved by early map-seller Francesco Rosselli.
